Barry Martin is a native of Webster, New York. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of William and Mary, holds a master's degree in American History from the University of Washington, Seattle, and graduated from the University of California Berkeley School of Law. He is a retired Administrative Law Judge. Barry and his wife, Carolyn, reside in Sacramento, California.

After a trip to China, the author happened across a fascinating memoir in a used bookstore, "I Flew for China - Chiang Kai-shek's Personal Pilot" (1942) by Royal Leonard, that led him into twenty years of research and interviews with Leonard's family and many others connected to dramatic events during the Golden Age of American Aviation and in China between 1935 and 1943.
