After a trip to China, the author happened across a fascinating memoir in a used bookstore, I Flew for China -- Chiang Kai-shek's Personal Pilot (1942) by Royal Leonard, that led him into twenty years of research and interviews with Leonard's family and many others connected to dramatic events during the Golden Age of American Aviation and in China between 1935 and 1943.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of William and Mary, with an M.A. in history from the University of Washington and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Martin is a tireless researcher. He retired from the legal profession as a Social Security Administrative Law Judge. Martin lives in Sacramento, California when he is not traveling (and visiting archives) with his wife Carolyn and cocker spaniel Koloa.
